County Route Shields on Guide Signs
Location: The entire state.
Current Sign: Region 8 seems to be the best at marking county routes at freeway exits.
In today's technologically advanced society we're thinking more in terms of numbers. Most of the web-based mapping sites include county route numbers on their navigation maps. In addition, the majority of the county highway departments in The Empire State maintain well marked, well numbered county routes. Therefore, it makes sense to better mark county routes on freeway exit signs.
There are currently signs showing county routes along NY 17 (Future I-86) in Orange County, in a couple of locations in Chemung County and at one interchange on the New York State Thruway at Exit 37. There are also various locations on Long Island that also show county routes. This needs to be implemented on a more consistent basis statewide.
The sign shown above would be found on Interstate 81 southbound in Oswego County. The current sign at this location simply says "Exit 36 / Pulaski".
